Boston Centerless is a leading manufacturer and distributor of precision bar materials and pre-production blanks for close-tolerance machining in industries such as medical, aerospace, automotive, and defense. Their AccuRod® and AccuBlanks® product families are designed to give manufacturers highly consistent, process-ready inputs that improve throughput and part quality.

From “Just bar stock” to Engineered process inputs

If you still design tooling, cycle times, and burr allowance around large, assumed variation in incoming bar stock, you are leaving significant throughput and tool life on the table.

AccuRod® and AccuBlanks® from Boston Centerless are not simply “premium centerless-ground bars.” They are tightly process-controlled inputs engineered to collapse stack-up error before it ever reaches the spindle.

AccuRod®: Stable bar stock for predictable machining

AccuRod® precision ground bar is produced with extremely tight dimensional and form control, enabling higher feeds and speeds with less risk:

  • Outside diameter tolerances as tight as ±0.000050 in (±1.3 μm)
  • Roundness routinely < 0.000050 in
  • Superior straightness, especially for long, slender length-to-diameter (L/D) ratios

These characteristics combine to deliver:

  • More concentric, stable clamping
  • Lower radial cutting forces
  • More tool life per inch of material removed

In practice, that means better control of part geometry, less unplanned downtime, and more predictable process capability.

AccuBlanks®: Net-length, machine-ready blanks

AccuBlanks® are produced from the same precision ground material and metrology pedigree as AccuRod®, but supplied as net-length blanks that are ready for the machine:

  • The same tight OD, roundness, and straightness control as AccuRod®
  • Supplied to finished or near-finished length
  • Minimal post-prep:
    • No saw-cut face non-squareness to correct
    • No additional turning step just to true up the ends

Because the blanks enter your process already prepared, you can move the first constrained feature earlier in the program and focus spindle time on value-adding geometry instead of cleanup operations.

Why this matters to technical buyers

When you compare conventional bar to AccuRod® and AccuBlanks®, the impact on downstream operations is clear:

Traditional Bar Stock AccuRod® / AccuBlanks®
Workholding often must “float” to mask runout Workholding behaves approximately as modeled
A roughing operation is needed just to “round it up” Roughing can often be simplified or eliminated
SPC traceability drifts as variation accumulates in-house Cpk is preserved upstream in the material itself

In short, specifying “round bar” is no longer enough.
By treating AccuRod® and AccuBlanks® as engineered process inputs—not commodities—you can reduce variation at the source, unlock higher spindle utilization, and preserve statistical capability all the way through to finished parts.
